Crim takes a hands-on approach to reimagining streets and public spaces. Through events like Better Block Flint, we help cities, neighborhoods, and developers turn plans and concepts into interactive experiences by designing and delivering full-scale demonstrations that can be tested by a community in real time.
These purpose-driven activations allow communities and decision-makers to evaluate design, transportation, and public space strategies in context—generating actionable insight, meaningful engagement, and momentum for implementation.

Better Block Flint:
Demonstrating What’s Possible in our hometown and beyond.

Better Block Flint is the Crim’s community-centered approach to reimagining streets, public spaces, and neighborhoods through temporary, real-world demonstrations. By starting small and showing ideas in place, communities can see what works, share feedback, and build momentum for lasting change.

In Flint and Genesee County, Crim uses Better Block to connect urban design, transportation, and public health—demonstrating how thoughtful places support active, healthy lifestyles.

Inaugural Better Block Flint

(2023)

The first Better Block Flint in September 2023 transformed a vacant city block into a neighborhood street guided by the vision and standards of Flint’s recently adopted 20-year plan. The demonstration showcased a range of concepts—from protected bike lanes to mixed-use development—within a single, two-day immersive experience.

By allowing policymakers and community members to experience these ideas in place, the event illustrated how small design changes can improve safety, comfort, and connection, while sparking continued interest in neighborhood-led change across the city.

Neighborhood Demonstrations: King Avenue PLUS

(2024–2025)

In north Flint, the King Avenue PLUS neighborhood has partnered with Crim Fitness Foundation over multiple years to demonstrate elements of its neighborhood plan during annual block parties near the Flint Neighborhood Engagement Hub.

Demonstrations have included temporary street redesigns that balanced space for cyclists, parking, and traffic; sidewalk beautification; and walking and biking audits that added new insight to an already strong community vision.

Micro Pop-Ups & Event-Based Activations

Crim also delivers small-scale, event-based pop-ups that add comfort, beauty, and learning to existing community gatherings.

Through partnerships with Levitt AMP Flint Concert Series, Totem Books, and Communities First, Inc., temporary seating, shade, and vendor structures have turned vacant lots into welcoming venues for concerts and events.

Similar pop-ups at Flint Art Walk and Alley Fest created shaded seating and pop-up galleries—supporting artists, increasing comfort, and sparking conversations about urban design and transportation.
