What Motivates Over 80 Community Members To Give Up Their Free Time On A Wednesday Evening? Flint Area Kids!

On September 26, 2018, over 80 community members including school staff, administrators, parents & even students, gathered together to strengthen their understanding of Success Mentoring and the role mentoring can play in supporting student success at the Success Mentoring Kick-Off Celebration!  The evening started with an inspiring keynote address by Ja’Nel Jamerson, Executive director of the Flint and Genesee Literacy Network. Mr. Jamerson shared his own experience growing up with mentors who invested in his life and the impact they had on his success.

Attendees at the Success Mentoring Kick-Off Celebration, participated in break out sessions that included: a hands-on student activity hosted by STEMnetics, a parent workshop led by Dr. Richard Lofton from the Success Mentoring Initiative at Johns Hopkins University & a Mentoring orientation session hosted by the Flint Community Education Initiative.  The evening ended with a fantastic meal provided by Johns Hopkins University. One teacher in attendance commented, “Thank you for hosting this event. My team is working together to mentor our students and this orientation was very helpful. The food was great and the speakers were very inspirational!”

The Flint Community Education Initiative team is so thankful for our community partners and volunteers who make Success Mentoring possible!  Are you interested in mentoring a student?
