The Safe Routes To School Program Is Hitting Swartz Creek Area

The Swartz Creek Board of Education and City Council approved a partnership with the Crim Fitness Foundation to implement the Safe Routes to School program.

The Active Communities program department is looking to obtain a $600,000 grant to pay for infrastructure, such as a walkway near Elms Road elementary, crosswalks where needed, and a bridge at the middle school, as well as signage and education.

The city and school officials have agreed to go 50/50 on the costs not covered under the grant and local share would amount to about $44,000 total. Superintendent Ben Mainka stated that no bond money will be used, as the school board could include it in the 2019-20 budget under the building and site fund.
