2020 CANCELLATION of the 63rd CANUSA GAMES DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Hamilton, ON and Flint, MI – The CANUSA Games Organizing Committees from Hamilton and Flint announce the CANUSA Games will not take place in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada this year on August 7th – 9th, 2020.

As much as our organizing committees are deeply saddened to make this announcement, this decision is necessary due to the current situation. We have been monitoring the COVID-19 crisis over the last several weeks and have considered the safety and comfort of our athletes, coaches, parents, and volunteers above all else.

The CANUSA Games is an annual amateur sporting competition taking place since 1958 based on the foundation of friendship between the communities of Greater Hamilton and Flint & Genesee County.  The communities alternate hosting, when families from the host city open their homes to athletes from the visiting community, in the spirit of international goodwill and neighborliness: thus our motto “Experience the Friendship”. The Games were expected to draw over 1,200 athletes competing in 12 sports.  Athletes range from youth to adult, with the majority between the ages of 10-17.

During this unprecedented situation, our hearts go out to all who have been impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak through separation from loved ones, loss of income, illness, or death. We are extremely grateful to the courageous health care workers and many service providers who assume personal risk in battling the virus while keeping our communities healthy, safe, and functioning at their best.

“Experience the Friendship” is more than our CANUSA Games motto, it is a belief that has been shared with the athletes and host families in our communities for the last 63 years. We hope that everyone stays healthy and safe and we look forward to the continuation of the Games and the opportunity to host the CANUSA Games in Hamilton, Ontario in the summer of 2021.” Greg Mills, President, Hamilton Board of Directors.

“The CANUSA Games have been a tradition in our communities for more than 60 years.  Although we are deeply saddened by the postponement, our first priority is to our families, coaches, and volunteers who make CANUSA a great weekend.  We look forward to returning to Hamilton, Ontario for the 63rd Games in the summer of 2021.”  Sharon Davenport, Program Director, PA, Sports and Nutrition, Crim Fitness Foundation.
