Alfreda Harris

Alfreda Harris is a Children’s Learning Specialist with the Flint Public Library (FPL) and a professional Storyteller.  She is honored to serve as a Crim Mindful Fellow.  Teaching Search Inside Yourself allows her to continue her lifelong passion for learning, teaching, and making a difference in her community.  She has practiced mindfulness for over 30 years. She seeks opportunities to share mindfulness through storytelling.  Alfreda has a diverse background in education and the arts.  Alfreda is a docent at the Flint Institute of Arts (FIA).  She has participated in the Crim Yoga Ed. and Mindfulness in the Classroom, and now serves as a Crim Mindful Ambassador.  Alfreda knows firsthand how mindfulness can support people’s lives.  She has the privilege of bringing mindfulness to her workplaces, and the art and music therapy groups where she is an active member. Her first SIY practicum has been with FIA docents and FPL colleagues. Alfreda was born in Clarksdale, MS.  Her family migrated to Flint when she was 3 years old.  She is a proud graduate of Beecher Community Schools having attended grades K-12. She graduated from the University of California-Los Angeles with a B.A. in English and African American Studies. She attended Portland State University for training and development and the University of Michigan School of Education. Alfreda is a former Peace Corps volunteer having served in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific working in Rural Community Education. Alfreda is single with five siblings and 33 nieces and nephews spanning three generations.  She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, reading and cooking.  Alfreda has travelled to 16 countries and lived in five states. She resides in Beecher in the house where she grew up.
