Flint CEI Care Package Project

School buses were out and about in Flint in July, but they weren’t full of students. The buses were loaded with Care Packages being delivered by Community School Directors and Crim staff to Flint area families!

The Flint Community Education Initiative (Flint CEI) team came together to assemble and deliver Care Packages for students of Flint-area schools and their families. The Flint CEI team organized donations from local partners and purchases made possible through generous funding from the C. S. Mott Foundation.

The Care Packages were loaded with non-perishable food, books, supplies, activities and swag for students and families. Additional CrimFit Active Kits full of sports equipment were also delivered from the Crim Sports team. While connecting families to resources is always the goal of the Flint CEI and our partners, the Care Package project was focused on connecting with students and families through safe home deliveries.

The home delivery of the Care Packages provided an opportunity for Community School Directors to connect with students who have been physically separated from the school building during the pandemic. Community School Directors were able to check in with many of the students and families while they opened their care packages. The timing of home deliveries also enabled Community School Directors to remind families about the upcoming start of the school year and help families navigate potential challenges with the online learning return to school. Community School Director at Pierce Elementary, Kyle Peppin, remarked: "I really think that sustained, regular home visits will make a difference this school year. That personal interaction can't be captured on Zoom. When you're there on their porch, that's a lot more impactful."

Over 4,000 total care packages were assembled, to serve students from 12 different schools. Flint CEI staff completed this operation with collaborative support from fellow Crim employees, AmeriCorps service members, Summer Youth Initiative workers, recent FCS graduates, YouthQuest, and community volunteers. It truly was a community effort in serving our Flint families. A buzz about the Care Packages could even be seen on social media as parents posted about the "goodies from Flint CEI".

For any of the Care Packages that were unable to be delivered, a distribution plan will be shared on FB @FlintCommunityEd. Follow us for updates as well as for announcements about upcoming events.

Special thanks to the staff at International Academy of Flint for hosting and supporting the Care Package assembly and to Southwestern Classical Academy staff for hosting future distribution efforts. Additional thanks to the many community partners who supported the effort through in-kind donations: Genesee Health Plan, Crim Sports & Nutrition team, Crim Active Communities, YouthQuest, HAP, Kingdom Builders at Freedom Center Church, First Student and Landaal Packaging.
